Abstract

In this study we introduce a new potential data source on migration intentions in the form of online job seekers actively searching for a job in a country other than their current location. We characterize job seeker interest across national borders by measuring user behavior on a major job search website. We show the job search data are strongly positively related to available OECD migration data and also find that in a gravity model both the determinants and the relative importance of the determinants for job search are similar to those in the literature for realized migration.
