Abstract

We study the influence of moral awareness cues on cheating in an online experiment (n = 551). People’s awareness of ethical issues is a pre-condition of moral behaviour. The results show that reminding people of the different ethical dimensions of their actions does not reduce cheating. Our results highlight that raising moral awareness in an online experiment is not sufficient to mitigate cheating behaviour.
