Abstract

This article provides an overview of public spending effectiveness (performance) and efficiency across the European Union over a decade (2007–2019) using a composite indicator. The results show an improvement of public spending effectiveness over time and a deterioration of the efficiency for most countries. Policies should be geared towards increasing the efficiency of government spending.
