•Results indicate a positive effect of mobile money on household resilience metric.•A 10 km drop in the distance user-agent increases resilience by a percentage point.•Study finds that mobile money users are more likely to withstand severe shocks.•Findings establish new evidence on the long-run effect of digital payments.
