Abstract

Abstract The Directorate General for Competition at the European Commission enforces competition law in the areas of antitrust, merger control, and State aid. After providing a general presentation of the role of the Chief Competition Economist’s team (CET), this article surveys some of the main developments at the Directorate General for Competition over 2023/2024. In particular, the article reviews: the revised “Market Definition Notice” for competition cases; the State aid decision that approved public support for the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Czechia; and the CET’s analytical approach to a number of major mergers that were proposed during 2023 but then abandoned by the companies.
